Citizen Journalists (Week 4)

I would like to talk more about citizen journalists, which was covered in the earlier presentation by Frederick and Nicole. I think citizen journalism is becoming increasingly popular to many. Such is possible with increasing media platforms, whether social networking ones or various websites that allow people to express their inner thoughts and views of a certain topic and issue. Some though might not consider blogs as being citizen journalists.

Well, to me, I would not consider a blog a platform of citizen journalism because it is not a "proper" platform. It also can be said that it might not seem credible enough for people to look at and take seriously. There are some interesting media platforms that have been used for some time already to gain the interests of netizens. This would include a Singapore-created STOMP, where all kinds of issues can be discussed, from more serious topics such as politics, to more light hearted topics that can relate to normal everyday life issues. I particularly like to see the section of Ugly Commuters, showing the ugly and negligent side of Singaporeans, in particular on public transport like buses and the MRT.

Personally, I think that being a citizen journalist is a good thing because people get to express what is really on their mind. However, there are certain issues that should not be discussed as they are deemed to be sensitive issues and might result in conflict if further pursued. As more people are getting bolder because of more opportunities given to them to express themselves,we all must be mindful that we have to be responsible for what views we put up on the web.

The Future of Journalism (Week 3)

The future of Journalism is a highly debatable issue. Now with modern technology that is constantly being introduced, various types of news have been increasingly circulating within new media, relating especially, to the internet. This is especially so with the new generation of Hi-tech gadgets, like the iphone 4, the ipad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab and so on. Various news websites contribute online posts and news feeds, such as ChannelNews Asia, CNN, BBC and many others. The increasing viewership of people is from browsing and getting newsworthy information from the Internet.

Looking at the ever increasingly pressurizing and stressful atmosphere that most Singaporeans are in, it just goes to show that convenience and accessibility is a better option and especially the fact that most news viewed online are free, whether through proper news websites or various social networking platforms. I personally get most of my information from online networking sites such as Facebook. To me, it is more convenient than buying a newspaper such as The Straits Times.

Also, I would rather get my information free than spending money on a full compilation of news in a newspaper for where I only read certain sections of it, especially if certain types of news are not read by me. Getting news online has its perks, where viewers have choices as to which websites they would like to visit. In that way, I would say there is more versatility when getting news online. Of course though, accuracy is questionable as certain questions might be raised as to whether certain pieces of information are actually true. However though the demand for newspapers are diminishing, I still say that newspapers are the most trustworthy sources in comparison to online news.
