The future of Journalism is a highly debatable issue. Now with modern technology that is constantly being introduced, various types of news have been increasingly circulating within new media, relating especially, to the internet. This is especially so with the new generation of Hi-tech gadgets, like the iphone 4, the ipad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab and so on. Various news websites contribute online posts and news feeds, such as ChannelNews Asia, CNN, BBC and many others. The increasing viewership of people is from browsing and getting newsworthy information from the Internet.
Looking at the ever increasingly pressurizing and stressful atmosphere that most Singaporeans are in, it just goes to show that convenience and accessibility is a better option and especially the fact that most news viewed online are free, whether through proper news websites or various social networking platforms. I personally get most of my information from online networking sites such as Facebook. To me, it is more convenient than buying a newspaper such as The Straits Times.
Also, I would rather get my information free than spending money on a full compilation of news in a newspaper for where I only read certain sections of it, especially if certain types of news are not read by me. Getting news online has its perks, where viewers have choices as to which websites they would like to visit. In that way, I would say there is more versatility when getting news online. Of course though, accuracy is questionable as certain questions might be raised as to whether certain pieces of information are actually true. However though the demand for newspapers are diminishing, I still say that newspapers are the most trustworthy sources in comparison to online news.

Hi Gwen,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that online media is much more convenient compared to traditional media. Although there is competitions between both platforms, i still think that some online media get their main arguments from traditional media. This is because Strait times and etc have an online version of their paper and it is mostly a replica of what is found in their media. So perhaps it was the traditional media which started the competition among themselves. Afterall, they encourage us to visit their websites.

Heya Gwen,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that newspapers are the most trustworthy source of news as compared to online news. However, we have more gadgets nowadays just like those you mentioned and we are able to access online news more easily and conveniently. This is probably the main reason why youngsters these days prefer getting their source of news online rather than from traditional media forms. But most importantly, online news are mostly free while we need to buy newspapers and we usually don't read all of it. So, if you ask me, I would definitely say that I prefer online news as well.
Thanks for your comments:) i agree with both of you regarding your views and opinions. Of course since technology is rapidly progressing, and convenience is a main factor to get news on the go, it will definitely be difficult for print media to keep up with the competition between online media. As seen and proven, online media is definitely the preferred choice among most.
ReplyDeleteI, too, would rather get my information for free (haha), because it's simply more cost effective for my to spend my money elsewhere. Especially since my family subscribes to the ST newspaper, I see no reason to subscribe online. Perhaps it's this viewpoint that is making it hard for online news sites to generate revenue.
ReplyDeleteBut at the same time, with the world becoming more digital, and with electronics becoming an increasing part of our daily lives, it is possible to tap into the sheer wiredness of our digital culture. While people may not pay for an online subscription, they seem more willing to pay for an app from an app store instead. Perhaps this can be an avenue for news outlets to tap to generate revenue.
